All That Trash

All That Trash

Juvenile nonfiction
Ready for a little talking trash? Megan McCarthy's All That
Trash enlightens readers about a very grungy incident from 1987.
A New York landfill was running out of space. The owner of a
waste company, Lowell Harrison, decided to take the garbage and ship
it by barge to North Carolina where it would be converted into
electricity.
What could go wrong?
North Carolina refused to take it. A bunch of states and other
countries followed their example.
So where'd all that trash end up? Read the book and see.
All that trash is a very timely reminder of a serious problem
that isn't going away any time soon, one that we must tackle.
On a personal note, here is a question I've been asked that you may
have considered. Why am I sharing my cat cancer experience in real
time rather than waiting until I can wrap it up and distill wisdom?
I've asked myself that too. It isn't by any means easy. But we live
in a society where much of our population has stalled out emotionally
somewhere between toddler and teen. We want things black or white,
right or wrong. We also want one magic bulletin solution to every
problem large or small. Eliminate one food and bye bye belly fat.
Elect this president (I'm indicting both parties here) and make
America great again... We are especially uncomfortable with anything
we can't solve just like that. Terminal illness falls into that
category.
Given the sheer number of people who at least visit this blog and the
type of people most likely to stick with it, and it's highly likely
there are people who have experienced, will experience, or will go
through the same thing. So maybe my experience will help them not
feel alone.
A great big shout out goes out to all who are coping with this
bittersweet experience.
