The Youngest Marcher
Juvenile herstory
Nine-year- old Audrey Faye Hendricks wanted to
*Eat ice cream inside Newberrys
*Sit downstairs in a movie theater
and *Study from new school books.
Those and other similar experiences were denied her because she was a
black child growing up in a time of separate and far from equal. She
was also growing up hearing stories of adults being denied jobs for
which they were qualified and being terrorized by the KKK and bullied
by the police. Actions to achieve fairness and justice--sit-ins,
pickets, and marches--would result in arrests and jail times.
Martin Luther King Jr. urged people to get arrested and fill the
jails. Adults with families to provide for and keep safe couldn't
take this step. But children could and did.
Audrey was the youngest. Can you imagine a week in jail with
only greasy grits to eat and a bare matress with only one thin sheet
for sleeping at her she?
Make sure the children in your life read her inspiring story.
On a personal note, I was going to cook my big turkey dinner today.
Only the bird of honor is taking longer than anticipated to thaw. So
the feast will be tomorrow.
A great big shout out goes out to the best little cat in the world who
is going to really perk up when he smells the rich aroma of roasting
turkey.
