Eyewitness World War II

Eyewitness World War II

Juvenile nonfiction
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. That would seem
to be the premise of the DK EYEWITNESS series. Highly engaging photo
packed volumes give well organized overviews on topics ranging from
CAT (yes, Anna, they also have DOG) through Rocks & MINERALS to World
War II.
WORLD WAR II gives readers glimpses into a world in conflict
from onset to aftermath. Each two page spread captures one aspect
with a succinct summary and ten or so photographs and other
illustrations. Among these are:
*Preparing for the worst introduces readers to preparations such as
gas masks, air-raid shelters, and improvised weapons;
*Bombing raids presents aircraft, weapons that rained death on
civilians, and shattered neighborhoods;
*Women at work brings Rosie the Riveter and her peers taking on
formerly all male roles to life;
and *A wartime childhood gives glimpses of what it was like to grow up
then.
I think this makes a good introduction to a topic that must
never be forgotten, glossed over, or glorified. It's very much needed
as the people who actually lived through the war are dying. The
brutality, destruction, and suffering are not glossed over. Readers
are encouraged to visit museums, watch documentaries and other movies,
read accounts found online and in books, and solicit narratives from
older family members.
Eyewitness World War II is a very worthwhile acquisition for
school and public libraries. The more we forget about the atrocities
of a war, the more likely we are to be drawn into another. World War
III could be the war to end all wars by killing off humans and
rendering this fragile, precious planet uninhabitable.
On a purrrsonal note, it's gloomy and grey outside. But inside my
home it's sunny because Joey is having a good day.
A great big shout out goes out to the best little cat in the world.
