Juvenile/YA fiction
Quite awhile ago there was a popular TV show called The Brady Bunch. A guy with three sons marries a woman with, you guessed it, three daughters. Each week a family crisis is resolved in thirty minutes.
The blended family featured in Susin Neilsen's We Are All Made Of Molecules is no Brady Bunch. Stewart and Ashley are about as far apart in their school's social structure as any two people can be. Stewart is a socially awkward math genius; Ashley is half of a super popular couple. School work doesn't come easy for her.
Stewart has seen his beloved mother die of cancer. Ashley's dad has moved out after acknowledging that he's gay (a secret she desperately tries to hide). When Stewart's dad moves in with Ashley's mom the kids do not bond.
Ashley is in danger. Boyfriend Jared wants far more than she's willing to give. He's losing patience. What if her nerdy, mathlete potential stepbrother is the only one who can detect the peril she's in and prevent her molestation?
Told in Stewart and Ashley's alternating voices, We Are All Made Of Molecules is the highly engaging story of two teens thrown together in a situation very much not of their own making.
On a purrrsonal note, I am very happy. My right leg is almost back to normal thanks to alternating heat and ice. We never appreciate wellness more than after we temporarily lose it. Also I've been having fun making bracelets and painting mirrors for myself and friends. (Jules)
And Eugene will come home soon. He has been away two sleeps. (Tobago)
A great big shout out goes out to Student Wellness for setting out the craft stuff.
