Catherine House

Adult fiction
"What was Catherine, exactly?  Let's say, a community of minds.  A crucible of experimental, reformist liberal arts study.  Research-and-development institute for the most radical new materials sciences.  A postsecondary school more selective than an Ivy League, and so terrifically endowed that tuition is free to any student lucky enough to be accepted."
Catherine House requires a rather unique commitment of its accepted students.  For their three year tenure they take classes year round and never leave the campus.  Parents and friends don't visit. In fact students are discouraged from speaking or thinking about their past lives.  There are no visits to town.  All essentials--clothes, toiletries, medications, school supplies--are provided.  TV is taboo.
It's housed in a cluster of maze like buildings with ornate but shabby furnishings and decor.  Set off a bit is a restoration center where students who get in trouble can get help to fit in better.
The school year is built around a series of unique rituals, some of which involve chanting and flashing pins attached to heads and chests.
Ines, protagonist of Elisabeth Thomas's Catherine House, is escaping a very troubled past by gaining admittance.  She's determined to do whatever it takes to stay in the one place that feels like a real home...
...only some aspects of her experience begin to feel really wrong...
...and she has to figure out what exactly is going on behind her school's locked gate, especially in the top secret laboratory.
Catherine House is a rather sophisticated and spell bonding chiller, creating a plausible alternative reality and raising questions of morals and ethics and what exactly constitutes meaning in life while making itself very hard to put down.  It's one of the very few books I purchased instead of borrowing.
On a purrrsonal note, Eugene and I went to his mom and sister's house for a barbeque.  His brother was there too.  We lucked out.  In the morning 🌄 it was foggy and slightly misting.  But the sun broke out and the sky brightened enough for an outdoor lunch.  (Jules)
A nice pretty day.  (Tobago)
A great big shout out goes out to Eugene and his family.
