The Lost Library

Picture book
Oliver, protagonist  of Jess McGeachin's  The Lost Library, has had to move to a new house, leaving many things behind.  Of course not his books which are his passport to other worlds.  When he finds an abandoned book in his closet he wants to keep it.  But it's inscribed to please return it to the lost library.
The problem is he has no clue where a lost library could be.  His mom is too busy and his cat too sleepy to help.  But new neighbor, Rosie, is willing to try.
The two find themselves in the Lost Library which contains a lot more than books: a stormy sea, a book forest, and even a dragon who gets quite grumpy when they wake him up.  By the time they escape Oliver has a new friend who shares his love of exploring new worlds through books.
Although most children will enjoy Oliver and Rosie's adventures, I feel that this lively narrative will be especially relevant for kids who have to move to a new home, losing many things and people.  There will be adventures ahead, if not grumpy dragons.  And a new friend can be as close as next door.
On a purrrsonal note, today was Indigenous Peoples Day.  I'm glad that we celebrate that instead of glorifying Christopher Columbus who was not really a good person.  There is so much we need to learn about our nation's original inhabitants who were and are respectful stewards of the earth and its resources. I wonder if Indigenous Peoples had cats.  (Tobago)
A great big shout out goes out to book loving children.
