Bad Witch Burning
YA chiller
"Don't. Don't do this. But what choice do I have? Benny's cut
my hours. I need to pay rent and keep the lights on. I need more
money...Will can afford to be hesitant, to feel sorry for the
Joneses. I can't."
Katrell, protagonist of Jessica Lewis' Bad Witch Burning, is in
a bad situation. It's her and her mother against the world. At least
that's what Mommy Dearest tells her. Even as she sits on her butt
letting her only daughter support her and her current loser boyfriend
and looking the other way when he abuses Katrell. Even when he shoots
her dog she takes his side. And when she and loser want to party they
steal from what little her child has set aside for next month's bills.
Katrell lives in fear that someone will call human services and
get her put in foster care. How will her mom survive without her? I
mean how messed up is that? The girl is just sixteen.
Katrell's minimum wage job alone can't fully support three
adults, two of whom have no sense of self discipline. So she has a
quite unusual side gig. She has special powers. As a child she could
see ghosts. Now, through letter writing, she can help people
communicate with their dead relatives.
Only one of the spirits tells her the letter writing is getting
too risky. That's about the same time her hours at work are
drastically cut. How is she going to keep a roof over her family's
head and the lights on?
How about raising the dead? It turns out people are willing to
pay a lot to be reunited with lost loved ones. What could possibly go
wrong?
Read the book and find out...
...if you dare.
On a purrrsonal note, I'm at the start of a four day fall break. No
work. No classes. This couldn't have come at a more purrrfect time.
I'm almost all recovered from the booster. Just tired and in need of
rest. (Jules)
Fall break sounds purrrfect to me. (Tibago).
A great big shout out goes out to all the other students (hopefully
safely) enjoying fall break.
