A Map Of The Dark
Adult chiller
"Lex has called again and left another message: 'We've been
getting a lot of calls about supposed Ruby sightings, but so far only
from crazies. I'll let you know if and when there's anything of
substance.' Elsa smirks to herself in the gathering twilight. The
first wave of callers is always made up of the true-crime enthusiasts
eager to dip into the action of someone else's catastrophe."
When we think of hauntings in relation to Halloween we usually
envision ghosts: departed entities who insist on lingering despite
their earthly demises. But people can also be haunted by events and
relationships that continue to color their thoughts and feelings
because they haven't been able to resolve them. Karen Ellis' chilling
A Map Of The Dark provides an excellent example of this.
Elsa, Ellis' protagonist, has a job most of us, especially those
of us who are parents, wouldn't envy. She's an FBI agent in a child
abduction unit. It can be a heart breaking profession. Not all the
children are found or found alive.
A teenage girl, Ruby, has vanished from her after school cafe
job. There is reason to believe she didn't just take off on her own.
She's a serious college bound kid who has never been a trouble maker.
The investigation of her disappearance doesn't start off well. And
when evidence comes in it points to the involvement of a very evil
man--a serial killer.
But that's not all that's going on in Mary's life. Her father
has sold the family home she grew up in. He's also been diagnosed
with terminal cancer. There are questions she'd like to ask him but
doesn't know if she ever will--like why he never intervened when her
mother was abusing her and he knew what was going on.
Elsa has her dark secrets. Does she ever!
If a roller coaster ride of a chiller is your cup of tea, be
sure not to miss out on A Map Of The Dark.
On a purrrsonal note, we're one work day away from the weekend. Adam
dropped by unexpectedly on his way home from UMaine. I was reading
outside and suddenly there he was! He showed me how to use the
printer he gave me for Christmas 2019 before the pandemic. I will
sure make good use of it. It was so wonderful for Eugene and me to
spend time with our son. (Jules)
It was great to see our Adam. (Tobago).
A great big shout out goes out to Adam.
