Accused

Accused

Juvenile herstory
"I didn't know I wasn't an American until I was sixteen and I
was in handcuffs."
Adama Bah, author of Accused, was at home sleeping the morning
of March 24, 2005. She was woken up when police and Homeland officers
and FBI agents stormed into her apartment, trashing the place and
screaming threats. Her father was in handcuffs. Soon she was too.
They were taken away from her mother and siblings.
Can you imagine experiencing that as a teen?
It was only the beginning. Adama was accused not only of being
in the United States illegally, but of being in training to be a
suicide bomber. She spent six and a half weeks in a detention
center. Then for three years she had to wear an ankle bracelet to
allow law enforcement to track her. When her father was deported she
had to drop out of school to support her family.
Accused gives younger readers an eye opening view of what many
Muslims went through in the aftermath of 9/11. It's a must acquire
for school and public libraries.
On a purrrsonal note, the rest of my school week went just fine. It
rained Thursday and was cold and windy today. So taking most of the
garbage and recycling outside to the dumpsters made me very popular at
work. On the way home today I stopped at Orono Public Library to pick
up 10 ILL books. I'm in geek heaven! (Jules)
WHERE IS MY TREE??? I WANT MY TREE!!! IT'S DECEMBER ALREADY!!!

A great big shout out goes out to students all over getting ready for
exams and looking forward to vaca.
